Building an Ant Farm

There are many methods to building an ant farm, from digging up the ants in the yard and putting them in a jar to buying the kits for an ant farm at the hobby store.  There are several things to consider when building the ant farm, such as:

Don’t select a variety of ant that bites or stings, such as fire or red ants, select the harvester or carpenter ants, if possible.
Be sure to get a queen, as many ants as possible, and if there are white eggs and larvae, make sure to put some of those into the habitat as well.
Generally they are unable to climb up glass sides, but if the habitat can be knocked over, be sure that it has a securely attached top – just make sure that there is a sufficient supply of air.
Make sure there is a water supply available – this can be as easy as dropping a soaked ball of cotton a few times a week.
Make sure they have a food supply, such as bread, vegetables, or fruit that has a bit of honey or sugar to attract them.
Cover the jar or habitat with construction paper so that it is dark which will entice the ants to begin constructing their new home’s underground tunnels.
Don’t move the habitat around or shake it because this could cause their tunnels to collapse.

Once the ants have constructed their tunnels the fun can begin in watching them grow into a thriving society.

Educational Benefits

There are many educational benefits to getting an ant farm for a child.  It’s a fascinating hobby, and somewhat inexpensive, and it will teach them a variety of lessons.  First, watching the different members of the farm, children will learn that each ant has its own purpose and duties, they interact with each other, and children can learn various aspect of nature in the environment.

The ant colony consists of queens, whose job is to repopulate the colony, soldiers, who are the workers, and the drones, who are fertile males that impregnate the queens.  These individuals have methods of communication; they divide the labor, and are reflections of human society as well.

Ants have an important environmental role in nature and contribute to the ecology of the planet.  Ant Farms for Kids also have an impact on teaching the children about the environmental.  They are great fun, take minimal responsibility and care, and educational for everyone involved in the colony.
