Global Warming
Global warming escalates not only by industrial and engine carbon emissions, but by poor gardening practices. When gardeners till their soils, they release carbon dioxide into the air which is ten times more than an ordinary person emits. The carbon dioxide in the soil comes from the natural expirations of fungi, microbes and earthworms living in the soil. Constant tillage not only displaces the carbon dioxide, but breaks down the soils nutrients and creates a perfect environment for soil erosion.
Instead of tilling soil, no-till gardeners use mulches and winter crop covers which after decomposition add nutrients and protection to the soil beneath. When they do fertilise and sow their next crops, disturbance of soil is at a minimum.
Good Fungi
Untilled soil harbours more of the fungi called vesicular arbuscular mycorrizae (VAM), which is beneficial to plants, forming a symbiotic relationship. This fungus gives plants important nutrients such as phosphorous and zinc, in exchange they take carbohydrates.
Surplus Nitrogen
Gardeners use far too much nitrogen and manures compared to farmers. Farmers ideally say a little will go a long way, whereas gardeners are wasting their money and efforts. Moderation is the best method to use for your pocket and your soil.
